School Consultation
Working collaboratively
Where appropriate and with consent, collaboration with parents, teachers, and other professionals is an important part of supporting a young person. By bringing together different perspectives, we can develop recommendations that are meaningful, practical, and individualised to the student's needs and strengths.
Why might a school observation be helpful?
A school observation may be considered when there are questions regarding:
-
Attention, executive functioning, or learning
-
Social interaction and peer relationships
-
Emotional regulation within the classroom
-
School engagement or participation
-
Sensory experiences in the learning environment
-
Classroom accommodations and support needs
-
Understanding a student's profile as part of a broader assessment
School observation
A school observation offers an opportunity to understand how a student engages with learning, navigates social interactions, and responds to the classroom environment. School observations are conducted as part of a collaborative, neurodiversity-affirming approach that values each student's unique profile. The aim is not to judge or evaluate a child, but to identify supports that can help them thrive.
A school observation is tailored to the referral questions and may include observation of the student within different classroom settings, during less structured environments (e.g., recess or lunchtime)
Consultation with teachers and relevant school staff
-
Review of current classroom supports and accommodations
Feedback session
-
Consideration of the student's strengths, learning style, social communication, emotional wellbeing, and participation
Following the observation, a feedback discussion will be provided, along with practical recommendations that may support the student's learning, wellbeing, and participation at school.
Recommendations are tailored to the individual and may include classroom strategies, environmental adjustments, wellbeing supports, or suggestions for further assessment where indicated.
